Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk has vowed to create a “leaderboard for the most insanely dumb spending” of American taxpayer dollars, marking a bold step into the political arena. The announcement comes following President-elect Donald Trump’s appointment of Musk to co-lead the newly formed Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) alongside biotech entrepreneur and former presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy. The acronym DOGE humorously aligns with Musk’s favored cryptocurrency, Dogecoin.
The mission of DOGE, according to Trump, is to “dismantle” excessive bureaucracy and improve governmental operations. Musk and Ramaswamy are set to provide the White House with independent insights aimed at “driving large-scale structural reform.” Musk outlined his vision in a post on X, the social media platform he acquired in 2022: “All actions for the Department of Government Efficiency will be posted online for maximum transparency. Anytime the public thinks we are cutting something important or not cutting something wasteful, just let us know!”
He added, “We will also have a leaderboard for most insanely dumb spending of your tax dollars. This will be both extremely tragic and extremely entertaining.” The announcement stirred public interest and signaled Musk’s deepening involvement in national governance.
In a Tuesday statement, Trump confirmed that Musk and Ramaswamy would work closely with the White House and the Office of Management and Budget to combat “massive waste and fraud” in the annual $6.5 trillion government expenditure. Musk has already made waves by advocating for a drastic $2 trillion reduction—nearly a third of the federal budget.
Trump emphasized the urgency of this mission, stating that the duo’s reforms should be completed by July 4, 2026. “A smaller Government, with more efficiency and less bureaucracy, will be the perfect gift to America on the 250th Anniversary of The Declaration of Independence,” Trump noted.
Musk, who has emerged as a major supporter of Trump’s campaign, has shifted politically in recent years. Initially endorsing President Barack Obama, Musk has now positioned himself as a prominent voice for conservative causes. His endorsement of Trump came after a dramatic assassination attempt on the candidate in July, followed by a substantial $119 million contribution to Trump’s campaign, which included a $1 million-per-day voter sweepstakes in Pennsylvania.
Since Trump’s recent election victory, Musk has reportedly spent significant time with the President-elect at Mar-a-Lago, signaling their deepening partnership in reshaping government priorities.
