The tension between Shedeur Sanders and Cam Newton has reached a boiling point, culminating in an awkward encounter before last Saturday’s college football game between UCF and Colorado. What initially appeared to be a minor rift has escalated into a genuine feud, and new video footage sheds light on the uncomfortable interaction that unfolded.
Cam Newton, the former NFL MVP and Heisman Trophy winner, has close ties to UCF head coach Gus Malzahn, who coached him at Auburn. Newton visited the Knights as they prepared to host Colorado for their first Big 12 game on the East Coast, but the pregame drama had already been set in motion earlier that week.
During his podcast, Newton made some controversial comments about Shedeur Sanders, Colorado’s star quarterback. While he expressed admiration for the Sanders family, particularly for Deion Sanders, he didn’t hold back when discussing Shedeur. Newton claimed that Shedeur isn’t the most likable player, especially compared to Travis Hunter Jr., Colorado’s standout two-way player. He even questioned what Shedeur had done to earn the attention he was receiving in college.
These remarks did not sit well with Shedeur, leading to the tense confrontation that followed.
On game day, as Shedeur warmed up at UCF’s Bounce House stadium, Newton approached him in an attempt to break the ice. However, it was clear that Shedeur was not interested in a friendly exchange. His cold response indicated he hadn’t forgotten Newton’s previous comments, leading to an uncomfortable moment as Newton’s efforts to engage were met with rejection.
In the video footage, Sanders can be heard telling Newton he’s “on some weird s—,” directly expressing his frustration. The brief exchange highlighted Shedeur’s resentment and his refusal to engage in any cordial conversation, making it apparent that the tension between them was palpable.
Interestingly, Cam Newton recorded the entire interaction, offering his perspective on what transpired. His footage revealed that Shedeur’s displeasure was genuine and pointed; he was clearly not in the mood for pleasantries. Throughout the encounter, Shedeur maintained a serious demeanor, signaling that reconciliation was off the table.
In contrast, Travis Hunter had a much lighter interaction with Newton. Despite being mentioned in the same podcast as Shedeur, Hunter appeared unbothered, laughing and joking with Newton, which starkly contrasted with Shedeur’s coldness.
This incident underscores the growing animosity between Newton and Shedeur Sanders, fueled by public comments and perhaps deeper underlying tensions. Shedeur clearly felt disrespected by Newton’s remarks and wasn’t prepared to let it slide, especially in such a public forum. While Travis Hunter could brush off the situation, Shedeur’s frosty response suggests this feud is far from resolved.
It appears that this awkward encounter may be just the beginning of a deeper divide between these two football stars from different generations, each with their own strong personalities and pride. Whether they can mend their differences in the future remains uncertain, but for now, the rift only seems to be widening.
