Stephen A. Smith’s claim that Colorado’s players thought too highly of themselves came back to bite the ESPN pundit in a big way.
Before Deion Sanders and the Buffaloes’ matchup against Oklahoma State, Smith unleashed a tirade, backing Sanders’ claim that his players had become “intoxicated” by success in recent weeks after Colorado’s loss to Kansas. The loss to the Jayhawks muddled the Buffaloes chances of making the college football playoffs, needing all pieces to fall into place to make it.
As such, Smith explained that he shares what the head coach said and went as far to call out the players on the squad for having an inflated sense of self after a successful season thus far.

“But here’s the biggest thing that plays a role: Too many damn dudes on the team think they ‘Prime Time.’ Your coach is ‘Prime Time,’ not you,” Smith’s tirade began. “Deion Sanders is the greatest cornerback in NFL history and arguably the greatest athlete in American history.
“Played basketball, played baseball, played football, played football in the NFL while he was playing Major League Baseball. Deion Sanders is as elite as they come and a winner wherever he goes. All-American at Florida State, special teams, wide receiver, cornerback in the NFL as a player. The brother’s all world. Y’all are not.”
While deriding the Buffaloes, Smith made sure to exclude two-way star Travis Hunter from the criticism, considering what the 21-year-old has done – and continues to do – this season. “Well, maybe Travis is [all-world] because that brother is special,” the 57-year-old added.

“But y’all are not. And because all this hype and this hoopla and this shine that was thrown on the organization, you got cats walking around there acting like you did something. You ain’t done —-. He has. That’s why Deion Sanders went up there in the post game and said, yo, cats were feeling themselves.”
And in the Buffaloes matchup against the Cowboys, Colorado seemingly imposed its will on Oklahoma State. In the first quarter alone, Colorado scored 21 straight points, blanking the defense and showing just how fired up the team was, especially after their loss to Kansas.
The second quarter saw both team go scoreless but that was the only respite for the Cowboys. In the final two quarters of play, the Buffaloes scored 31 unanswered points, thoroughly outplaying the Cowboys at every juncture, led by an effort from star quarterback Shedeur Sanders and Hunter.
In the 52-0 blowout win, Sanders completed 34-of-41 pass attempts, throwing five touchdown passes with on interception. Three of those passes was to Hunter who finished the game with 10 receptions for 116 yards as LaJohntay Wester joined him in the action with the other two touchdowns going his way.
On the defensive end, Hunter snagged another interception, showing he is a force to be reckoned with on either end. Because of Hunter’s outing, the Buffaloes head coach had a very simple message for fans regarding his two-way star’s ability.
“I think Travis [Hunter] clinched the Heisman with his performance,” Deion Sanders told reporters after the game, according to The Sporting News.
