The Golden State Warriors’ noteworthy start was derailed by a team chasing history – the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Darius Garland and Evan Mobley led the Cavaliers to a resounding 136-117 victory over the Golden State Warriors on Friday, with Garland scoring 27 points and Mobley adding 23. This win extends the Cavaliers’ franchise-best start to an unbeaten 10-0 this season, in a game that was not as close as the score might indicate.

The Cavs made NBA history by becoming the first team ever to win their first 10 games while scoring at least 110 points in each game, breaking the previous record held by Wilt Chamberlain and the 1960-61 Philadelphia Warriors. The Cavaliers also set a franchise record with a staggering 41-point halftime lead at 83-42, tying the eighth largest in the NBA’s shot clock era, and matched their record for points in a half.

Ty Jerome contributed 13 of his 20 points before halftime. For the Warriors, Jonathan Kuminga scored 21 points and Stephen Curry had 12 points but committed six turnovers. The defeat marked Golden State’s first loss in six road games this season. Draymond Green managed six points, six assists, and four fouls.

The Warriors seemed lethargic on the fourth stop of their five-game road trip, ending their five-game winning streak. They were outscored by 25 points in Curry’s 24 minutes and by 23 in Green’s 21 minutes, showing just how tired the Warriors appeared after their impressive win over the Boston Celtics.

Despite an off night by All-Star shooting guard Donovan Mitchell, who was limited to 12 points, the Cavaliers, the NBA’s highest-scoring team, didn’t miss a beat. Mitchell missed nine of his 13 field goal attempts and committed four turnovers, though his scoring punch was offset by Cleveland’s other stars.

Garland and Mobley led the Cavaliers to a commanding 20-2 lead, with Garland sinking two 3-pointers and Mobley contributing six points. The Golden State Warriors struggled early on, missing eight of their first nine field goal attempts, and Green was hit with two fouls within the first 5:39.

This game marked the 21st time in NBA history that an undefeated road team faced off against an unbeaten home team, with each having played a minimum of four games. The Cavaliers maintained their perfect record at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse, moving to 5-0.

Cleveland is the first NBA team to win its opening 10 games of the season since the Warriors did so in 2015-16. Golden State went on to go 24-0 that year before finishing with a regular season record of 73-9 – the best in NBA history. Steve Kerr’s team then went 3-1 up in the NBA Finals, only to lose in seven games to the Cavaliers of all teams.

Up next, the Warriors will travel to Oklahoma City on Sunday, while the Cavaliers will host Brooklyn on Saturday night.
