Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin met in Alaska on Friday, with the US president reportedly making his Russian counterpart a promise in a moment not spotted by most
In what many hope could mark a pivotal moment in the Russia-Ukraine conflict, US President Donald Trump and Russia’s Vladimir Putin met in Alaska yesterday (Friday August 15).
The two leaders exchanged greetings after arriving in Anchorage before discussions turned to the ongoing war in Ukraine. However, a behind-the-scenes moment captured by The National Desk offered a tantalizing glimpse into potential future developments between the two powerhouses.
While the audio couldn’t be heard, lip reader Jeremy Freeman told the Irish Star he believes the US president assured the Russian leader “we’ll get it over the line” during the private exchange caught on camera.
In what could signal things to come between the pair, Jeremy thinks Trump told his counterpart: “Ah very good…. you should see mine… ok, good to see you and well talk again soon…. and we’ll get it over the line.”
While the exact meaning behind Trump’s alleged “we’ll get it over the line” comment remains unclear, it follows the leaders’ failure to hammer out a ceasefire agreement.
The development came after the presidents were scheduled to hold a joint press conference but instead opted to deliver separate statements without taking questions from waiting reporters.
However, it seems the two leaders are set to meet again in the coming months as Putin extended an invitation for Trump to visit Russia.
As their public address wrapped up, Putin surprised everyone by switching to English and telling Trump: “Next time in Moscow.”
Trump responded with: “Oh, that’s an interesting one.” He added: “I’ll get a little heat on that one, but I could see it possibly happening.”
After the meeting concluded, a video was released by Putin’s special envoy for investment and economic cooperation, Kirill Dmitriev. He stated: “There were lots of issues that we discussed, and many we agreed. Some of them are to be agreed.”
He went on to say: “And definitely it’s very important that President Trump outlined a significant economic potential of cooperation between US and Russia.”
In other news, Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed on X that he is scheduled to meet with the US president on Monday (August 18).
In a snippet from his post on the social media site, he wrote: “On Monday, I will meet with President Trump in Washington, D.C, to discuss all of the details regarding ending the killing and the war. I am grateful for the invitation.”
