Missouri hockey star Colin Brown of Christian Brothers College High School tragically died aged 16 after being shot on his way home from a game.

Brown was in the passenger seat while he was driving home from his game with his father when a stray bullet struck him on a busy highway. He was shot around 10:30 p.m. on Interstate 55 in South St. Louis Saturday night, according to First Alert 4, and he was rushed to hospital before succumbing to his injuries.

“Colin — a beloved and talented hockey player — passed away but not before giving the ultimate gift of life,” St. Louis Metro Police Department Director of Public Affairs Mitch McCoy said. “Colin’s organs were donated to other patients who were in desperate need. This donation is an example of the type of young man Colin was and the kind of family he grew up in.”

Fox 2 reports that police believe there was a gunfight as the Browns traveled in the opposite direction from the hockey game. Brown only transferred to Christian Brothers College High School in the fall, with the school one of Missouri’s most elite hockey high school programs. The teen was just seven games into his career at CBCHS, and the team has paid tribute to the talented hockey player.

“It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts and that we share with our Christian Brothers College High School community the news of the tragic loss of our CBC brother, Colin Brown, a member of the Class of 2026 who was the victim of a random shooting this past weekend,” the school said in a heartfelt statement.

“As our community grieves together, our prayers, support, and love are with his family and close friends during this most challenging time.

“Colin joined our brotherhood this fall, transferring to CBC from his previous high school in O’Fallon, IL. He was a talented and dedicated student who was enrolled in Honors courses, and he was a valuable member of our CBC Varsity Hockey team.

Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May Colin’s soul, and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. St. John Baptist de La Salle … Pray for us. Live Jesus in our Hearts … Forever!”

Tributes have poured in on social media. “Peace to the Brown family, Colin’s classmates @CBCHighSchool, his former classmates in O’Fallon, IL, current and former teammates, and everyone who knew and loved this young man. Peace to the recipients and families of those who have received the donated organs from Colin,” one X user said.

“Prayers ascending for the CBC family. It is heartbreaking to lose a student. They are not our children, but we love them and have hopes and dreams for them. Sending love to Colin’s family and teachers,” another said.
