A civil lawsuit filed in Los Angeles has accused country singer Garth Brooks of sexual assault and battery by an unnamed hair and makeup artist, identified in court documents as “Jane Roe.” The plaintiff alleges that Brooks raped her during a work trip in May 2019 and subjected her to repeated sexual harassment throughout that year.
In a statement, Brooks vehemently denied the allegations, calling them “lies” and asserting that he is “incapable” of such behavior. He stated, “I trust the system, I do not fear the truth, and I am not the man they have painted me to be.”
The lawsuit, filed by attorney Douglas Wigdor—known for representing high-profile clients in the #MeToo movement—claims that Brooks exploited the stylist’s financial struggles, initially offering her more work before engaging in a pattern of harassment and assault. Wigdor and his team emphasize that “sexual predators exist not only in corporate America, Hollywood, and in the rap and rock industries but also in the world of country music.”
In his response to the allegations, Brooks characterized them as attempts to extort money from him. He stated he has faced relentless threats and harassment for the past two months, suggesting that he has been pressured to pay “many millions of dollars” to silence his accuser. Brooks noted, “Hush money, no matter how much or how little, is still hush money. In my mind, that means I am admitting to behavior I am incapable of – ugly acts no human should ever do to another.”
The accuser, who has over 30 years of experience in the music industry, claims Brooks raped her in a hotel room in Los Angeles during a trip for a tribute performance. She alleges that after the assault, she suffered physical injuries requiring medical attention and ongoing emotional trauma.
The lawsuit also details other instances of harassment, including inappropriate comments and groping during styling sessions, which the plaintiff claims were witnessed by other employees. In 2020, the complaint alleges Brooks deleted text messages containing explicit content from her phone without her consent.
In a separate legal action, Brooks filed a lawsuit in Mississippi, alleging that Roe had been working for him as an independent contractor for approximately 15 years and claiming that her demands for financial assistance escalated over time. He contends that when he declined her requests for a raise and health benefits, she retaliated with false allegations of sexual misconduct.
Brooks’s Mississippi lawsuit seeks to publicly declare the allegations untrue and prevent her from disclosing them further, framing her actions as extortion and defamation. In response, Roe’s legal team described this maneuver as an attempt to intimidate and bully his accuser.
Amidst the legal turmoil, Brooks expressed his desire to continue his music career and engage in charitable work, lamenting the impact of these accusations on his reputation.
