Jey Uso seized the WWE Intercontinental Championship from Bron Breakker in a shocker of a match on Raw.
The ensuing result is sheer chaos.
Of the best kind, of course.
An unexpected title change on Raw—or any weekly broadcast, for that matter—just doesn’t happen often anymore. And it’s especially rare to see a long-requested winner like Jey Uso win.
The fallout has a chance to be stunning. Breakker, a perceived unstoppable force and future top champion, now has to pick up the pieces after the upset. Jey’s sudden win means other names on the roster will step into the picture and the new champion, well, he happens to have a family that fans know quite well.
Here’s a look at the top possible new storylines in the wake of Jey’s victory.
Bron Breakker the Babyface
It was easy to assume that Breakker wasn’t going to lose the title for a long, long time.
This is, after all, the new Triple H era in which title reigns go extra long, permitting plenty of breathing room for story beats and character development.
But there’s plenty of development to be had in a dominant force being humbled at the age of 26.
Now, it sure feels like Breakker is headed for a babyface turn. He’s getting plenty of cheers already, anyway, while he shouts out “his dogs” in the audience. It only seems like a matter of time before he’s got some white-hot momentum.
Maybe that means a rematch with Uso, sure. If that happens, perhaps he gets humbled again. But it also isn’t that unrealistic to think WWE has him aim even higher so that he’s looking eye-to-eye with someone like Gunther by the time the next WrestleMania season really kicks into gear.
New Day…starts a New Day
Uso’s big win is going to send a ripple effect across the roster.
As it turns out, recent discord between the New Day’s Xavier Woods and Kofi Kingston might have actually been building directly in unison with Uso’s eventual win.
Woods, specifically, has been jealous and paranoid in recent weeks about Kingston getting help from other Superstars and things along those lines. There’s a tension there because Kingston’s solo resume far, far outstrips what Woods has achieved alone.
And now there goes Jey, splitting from The Usos to massive success.
It feels like a New Day shattering is upon fans, which could mean not only Woods-Kingston matches, but perhaps Woods going after Uso, too.
Dominik Mysterio Hints at a Run
Uso’s loosish affiliation with The Judgment Day storylines could be something else WWE decides to explore in more detail now that he’s got a title around his waist.
While much of the solo title attention has gone to Damian Priest over the last year or so, there’s also the matter of the rising star, Dominik Mysterio.
Mysterio had a few brushes with the Intercontinental title over the summer on house shows, but was eliminated in the first round of the tournament in September.
Now, a little faction-adjacent tension and drama could eventually lead to a match between Uso and Mysterio. And while that’s interesting for Jey, it could also be used as a tool to keep playing up the drama for Judgement Day and those in its orbit right now as all would be forced to choose sides.
The Bloodline
Don’t groan—The Bloodline, like Thanos, is inevitable.
It has long felt like Jey was spinning his wheels a bit until he got looped back into Bloodline affairs via Roman Reigns and others. Now that he’s got some individual gold, well, that feeling hasn’t exactly faded.
Maybe it starts with Jimmy Uso’s return. Perhaps, more likely is Solo Sikoa’s Bloodline attacking and costing Jey his title at some point in the near future after all parties have pretty much been carefully kept away from each other.
Either way, it is only a matter of time before Reigns comes back around and WWE does what is sure to be an amazing redemption arc, with the Tribal Chief winning his family back over as he seeks allies. Just like that, it’s Jey with the solo gold, all the friends and love from fans, so the dynamic is more compelling than ever.
Perhaps this is something WWE pushes out of what is usually a quiet end to the calendar year in favor of some of what has already been mentioned above.
But it’s coming.
